I spent the last weekend at BayCon, participating on panels and in the Variety Show. It was a blast.
This convention I use as time to meet up with friends I only get to see two or three times a year. I will spend time with Melissa Snark, Elanor Hughes, Denise Tanaka, Jennifer Carlson, Arley Sorg, and Erin Metcalf, and so many other people escaping my memory at the moment. I got to spend a brief moment with Seanan McGuire, Amber Benson, and Mary Robinette Kowal.
Friday I spent most of the day in panels and reconnecting with people. For once, I arrived early enough to attend the Opening Ceremonies. I went to the Basic Crochet class to offer to assist with the lessons. Rellie, the person running the craft room, recognized me and said “Assist? You could teach this class.” That was how I ended up teaching people how to make a lanyard for their badges (pattern forthcoming) with only five minutes preperation.
Saturday was more panels. My focus for most of the evening was on the Variety Show, specifically the costuming portion. We did manage to sneak in a spontaneous back stage dance party during one of the lip-sync performance of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off.” Congratulations to Erin for taking first place. I came in second, and Denise’s very impressive Wonder Woman was third.
Sunday, it was my turn to present panels. I spoke about Plus-size Cosplay and Cosplay Characterization. I spent the day walking around in my Maleficent costume, but forgot to take pictures of it. (I hope to have some better ones soon.) After saying goodbye to my friends, it was back to the real world.
Had a great time seeing you too!
The magnificent Maleficent! It was a pleasure being your lesser minion. 😀 I had a great time this weekend too. I will send you the pictures I took of your costume soon.
We need to get together more often!
I think that an argument could be made that I was the Plague Doctor’s minion. I just wish I had thought of taking a picture of your awesome costume!
